Kind Items to Keep in Your Car - Especially in the Summer

Summer is around the corner and temperatures will be on the rise. Check out the items community organizers and nonprofit professionals recommend keeping in your car this summer so you’re always ready to be kind.

  1. Water Bottles - When it gets hot, water can be important. When it gets really hot, water can save lives. If you’re going to purchase one item from this list, let it be water.

  2. Wet Wipes - Whether it’s to help handle your own sweat, sticky summer spills, or to provide sanitation and dignity to an individual on the street, wet wipes are a good move.

  3. Fruit Cups - Good to keep handy in the summer! They’re hydrating and a fun snack for time outside. Grab some from the store and keep them in your car through summer.

  4. Socks - Socks are often the most requested item from organizations supporting unhoused individuals in the summer. Sweat, dirt, and dust are a mean combination.

  5. Period Products - Menstruation sucks and getting surprised by your cycle sucks even more. Whether you keep period products for yourself and friends or anyone and everyone, it’s a smart and kind move.

  6. Gardening Gloves - An animal conservation professional recommended gardening gloves so the brave can check roadkill for baby animals / opportunity to be saved. Alternatively, gloves can also be used to move living animals out of the road. Proceed with caution and make the safe decision for your safety - these acts should be done by a professional.

  7. Narcan - Emergencies happen and narcan is a tool that saves lives. Carry Narcan if your budget allows and regardless, watch a video or two about how to use Narcan so you’re prepared if necessary.

  8. Chips / Non-Perishable Food - A snack is always appreciated. Chips are one of the items I keep in my car often. Granola bars are also good! Avoid items with nuts or super hard items.

  9. Gloves & Hats - Hypothermia and lost fingers is a true threat for individuals on the street in the winter. They can also save you in a pinch.

  10. Lights - A hot commodity! They can be traded and help keep warm.
